Going to Macedonia? Say DOBAR DEN first!

Macedonian (македонски јазик, makedonski jazik, [maˈkɛdɔnski ˈjazik]) is the official language of the Republic of Macedonia and is a part of the Eastern group of South Slavic languages. It is also referred to by several alternative names, many formed with the word Slavic. Macedonian is closely related to Bulgarian, with which it is mutually intelligible, and to a lesser extent with Serbian.

So if you want to learn some Macedonian, here are some on-line links you could use:

A good and easy to operate on-line dictionary

A not-too-bad phrase-book with the most common words and phrases

In the so called Balkans Phrase-Book, you could find lots of phrases in all the Balkan languages, but here' the English-Macedonian version

Relaxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Today I am not going to write much... Just go and listen - those are my three favoutite Macedonian bands and musicians - in alphabetical order ;)

Anastasia are formed in 1990. The group comes from Skopje,Macedonia, and is the most successful group in its own country. Their music is a unique blend combining Byzantine past, through Eastern Ortodox church music with a rich gamut of ethnic rhythms. They play acoustic instruments only. Some songs to listen online here.

The band Synthesis was established in 1995 for the purpose of carrying out an in-depth pursuit of the outstanding folk music treasures of Macedonia. The name "Synthesis" was chosen to express the concept of the group, which is to combine traditional sounds with contemporary arrangements to create a musical synthesis. You could listen to my favourite song, Pomolila Boga Maca or go and choose another one to listen to by checking the "free stuff" link on the page.

Vlatko Stefanovski is an ethno-rock jazz fusion guitar player from the Republic of Macedonia. Born in Prilep in 1957, he started playing guitar at the age of 13. He is now one of the biggest names in macedonian contemporary music. At the mp3's section on the page you could see and download the other one of my favourite Macedonian songs - Gypsy Song.

BREAKING NEWS

Since our blog is going to have baby-blogs, todays links would be of a good use for those who would preffer not to sit by their computers waiting for the BIG EVENT but go to some interesting places nearby, so:

Saint Erasmo is an old Christian basilica and necropolis. It is located five kilometers from Ohrid on the Ohrid - Struga freeway.

Sveti Naum is a monastery by the Ohrid Lake, 29 km south of the town of Ohrid near the Albanian border.

The church St. Bogorodica Zahumska is located on the shore of Lake Ohrid, on its eastern part around 20 km of the town of Ohrid near the village of Trpejca.

Located on the southwestern side of the hill surmounting Lake Ohrid is the church dedicated to St. John the Theologian - Kaneo. It is not certain when it was built and fresco painted. However, a document about the church property suggests that it was built before 1447.

St. Clement's monastery "St. Pantheleimon" is located at Plaosnik (known as Imaret during the Turks), southwards from the Samuel Fortress. This monastery is the oldest Slavic monument of culture.

A large church with compound foundations and a complex history, St Sophia is one of the most impressive medieval buildings in Ohrid.

A Poll

The Internet and audiovisual media influence is unprecedented in modern culture. Communication environment becomes a habitat where the Electronic Culture human builds his/her own self-concept, his/her image of himself/herself, his/her environment mental pictures and his interactions in a whole new way. Reality becomes less and less represented and imitated in the Information Society. It gets more and more simultaneously built but not as something that occurs alongside the human but around him. After being side viewer for a long time now the individual becomes a participant in the media and cyber space.

A unique feature of the Internet is that it depends on the user – the individual could control the information he gives about himself/herself, he/she could manipulate his/her own identity, he/she could build and maintain his/her own computer based person – a Virtual Self. As far as one possesses specific characteristics that are different from the Everyday's one and being compared to virtual environment, the Virtual Self transforms from being a metaphor to becoming reality.

Just compare your everyday to your virtual identity; are they different in the characteristics of the image you maintain in the physical reality and the one you build in the Internet?
